Would you consider this the eptiome of an irresponsible pet owner?

I am interested in seeing your opinions afer you read this ad I saw on my local craigslist this morning.

My wonderful Bernese Mtn. Dog needs a home due to a move to a ranch where there are other dogs and he will not adapt. He is almost 14 but still appears to have lots of life left in him! He is a medium-size dog, approximately 80 pounds (just a bit overweight). He is a happy dog, mostly deaf, but still gets around fine. He has been in my family for most of his life and I hate to let him go. He loves people but needs to be in a home with no other animals.

I just want him to be able to live out whatever time he has left with someone who can give him lots of love and attention. He loves to eat and sleep, and up until recently, he was my constant companion in the back of my truck, but lately getting up on the doggie ramp proves to be a little hard for him and I don’t want him to hurt himself. He has been seen around town constantly with his red bandana on, barking happily with his tounge flapping in the wind for the last 13 years.

He has had a little separation anxiety lately and I am not able to spend enough time with him. Ideally, if you are a stay-at-home type person who just wants some companionship and can open your home and your heart for whatever time he has left, then you are the one I am looking for. I’m asking a very small adoption fee of just to assure he will not go to a home where the new owner will abuse or take advantage of him, and to show that they can afford to keep him.

I will even give you a month’s supply of dog food to go with him. He is low maintenance and just needs to be loved. Please call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxxfor more info.

After reading that do you consider this just an irresponsible owner who does now want to do the right thing and have the dog put to sleep since they can no longer care for it?

Do you think it is right to rehome a dog at that age that has both behavioral and health issues?

What would you do?

Last but not least, do you think the chances of someone not only taking this dog, but PAYING a rehoming fee are slim and none?
ADD: Of course this person could build a dog yard for this dog on the ranch she now lives on. Thus keeping it seperate from the other animals. They clearly have more then enough room for that.

Oddly enough I saw this dog just a couple weeks ago driving through my neighborhood. You don’t see too many dogs riding in the back of a truck where I live(most people are way more responsible then that), much less a Berner.

He is irresponsible in the fact that he never did anything about the behavior problems and allowed the dog to be overweight. If he was a responsible owner he would find a way to have the dog with him or put him to sleep. He certainly should not be putting a price tag on him.
I doubt this dog would last more than a month being taken from his familiar surroundings and thrown in a new situation.

I think who ever takes this dog should not be required to pay a homing fee as you well know there will be many vet bills coming up. Try to place him in a home with an older person who does not have pets.

I would not sell a dog because of age/behavior and health – most likely, behavior would be my fault, health, cannot always be helped.

I think what her hidden agenda is, is to give her dog, with issues for someone else to deal with. It shows a bit of her character. Maybe its not such a bad thing for the dog to be rehomed. The owner, clearly has lost interest in her aging dog. The minute the dog got old, her relationship with the dog got old, which is very sad.

I dont think this makes her exactly irresponsible, if shes cared for this dog up to this point. I just think it makes her, selfish to get rid of this dog… now

Is the owner irresponsible? I don’t know. Maybe he has been responsible up until this point…I’m not sure why anyone would want to get rid of a dog at that age. Maybe you’re right and this dog does need to be euthanized and he doesn’t have the balls lol.

Is it right to rehome a dog at that age with behavioural and health issues? Forget the latter, even if the dog was healthy and behaved like a gentleman I still wouldn’t rehome a dog at that age. That’s a horrible thing to do to your pet. I mean this person is moving somewhere where there will be other dogs – so it’s not a case of "I can’t bring the dog" or whatever other excuse people usually give.

Nobody in their right mind would take this dog let alone pay a rehoming fee. Not unless he came across a martyr that just felt bad for the dog.

Do you think that’s true, a 14 year old Bernese mountain dog? From a home that obviously is neglectful..?

But that’s not the point…I believe when you commit to a dog it’s for life. However, a question was asked before if anyone had ever rehomed a dog, and many TC’s here said yes. Why is it ok to rehome a dog because it wasn’t the "right match" but it’s not ok to rehome a dog because you can’t afford or have time for the senior care? I think both are wrong. If people planned better before getting a dog (or realizing you shouldn’t get a dog at all), rehoming would happen a lot less.

Anyway what i consider the *epitome* of irresponsible owners, are people who don’t do anything to help their sick or hurting dogs, and blame it on either no money or no way to get to the vet, both should have been planned for for emergencies.
