Why do my sister's dog scrach the bottom of his water bowl?

My sister’s pomeranian (cashes) is a odd dog. We would give him some water and he would drink it. then out of no where he would scratch the bottom of the dish, spilling his water every where.

It sounds like he’s a water dog. Some dogs are. They just like playing with water. I have a water dog. She claims she cannot drink water unless her right paw is resting in the bowl with the toes delicately soaking to flavor the water. She also stores her toys in the water. And heaven help the person who turns on the garden hose because she goes nuts.

If you want him to stop doing it, try getting a metal pail for his water and attaching it to a wall. If it is raised off the floor, it will be harder for him to get his paws into it, while still being able to reach it to drink. The narrower opening also makes it harder to aim paws and get them into the bowl (much easier to aim the nose into a pail than paws).

Pomeranian are Nordic breeds which love to stay cool during the warmest times of the year. The coolest part of a pomeranian is their underbellies. When your sister’s pom splatters his water around he is just trying to keep his foot pads and underbelly nice and chill.

Both my Pomeranian love to splatter water as well on very warm days. There are even times when I found them dumping their heads into the water bowl as if they were bobbing for apples. Other times, it gets way out of hand, especially when I leave them alone for a few minutes and than come back to find them happily slip and sliding on my kitchen floor.

My sable pom loves everything about water. You’ll find her doing aerials and back flips when the sprinkler or hose is on or flying leaps into the pond without a care. On the other hand, my cream pom loves puddles of mud, stinky possum poop and rolling into dead smelly things. So when the minute she hears a running faucet/hose she’ll run lightening fast and hide. Although one loves to play while the other one would care less- when it gets hot, playing isn’t entirely important to them, its all about feeling wonderfully refresh on a sunny day.
