My choice would be a Golden Retriever. They are very gentle and great with kids, also very protective. They also love to be outside and get lots of exercise by running and playing. Not good to leave a dog out in the winter as they need warmth too just like we do.This is my opinion.

go to the shelter and pick out a dog that is 1-3 years old. most likely, this dog might have some previous training. A Lab/shepherd mix might be the best for kids.

An adult shelter dog is the best choice. Pick one out with a good temperament and that can take the weather.

If you insist on a purebred, I would look to Saluki’s, Pharaoh Hounds, Greyhounds, and other dogs that were developed in similar areas.

Australian shepherds or border collies are both great dogs who don’t mind being outside for long periods as long as they have plenty of exercise. They are intelligent, agile, and great with children. They also have enough fur that they don’t mind cold so much, and with enough water they won’t mind heat. They also are excellent frisbee dogs.
