my dog tore the pad on her foot

.

It is not really bad but it is obviously bothering her. I don’t know how she did, it was either because she was running a lot in my grandma’s back yard when I was out of town, or because she was running on the tennis courts today and it was pretty hot. They don’t look fresh so I don’t think are from today but I don’t know. Anyways, is there anything that I can do at home to help her. I have stopped playing ball and I won’t play for a while, is there anything that I can put on it that will make her feel better? I know what you are going to say, take her to the vet…but I would like to try and fix this at home before I take it to that level.
glamourjunkie…
i know that she either injured her paws in my grandma’s yard where there is no metal, just dirt and rocks and sticks, or she hurt them running on the hot cement today. i have a feeling that she cut them on a rock or stick and reinjured them today. she is not in serious pain she is just in some discomfort. she still wants to play ball and chase the cat so she doesn’t jurt bad enough to stop running.

    You have an open wound.

You have no idea how it happened.

    It’s causing your dog pain.

And you DON’T want to take it to the "level" of going to the vet? She could have been cut by rusty metal, or get an infection–the best thing you can do is go to the vet and get a proper dressing on it. Usually I wouldn’t be concerned but since you don’t know how it happened, there’s a lot of things that could go wrong. Make a dressing out of clean towels and call your vet.

You should soak her foot in some warm water. Then after 10-15 minutes, you should wrap something like a long skinny towl around the cut. Clean it up with some peroxide, and make sure it stays clean. Keep her off the foot. 🙂 Good luck!

EDIT: Accually, If it is really deep you should take your dog to the vet.. In a matter of time, your dog could get infected. Dogs walk around a lot, on dirty floor. It could of been anything, but to be on the safe side.. a vet is the trip for you.

I think that you really should take her to the vet because it could get infected. When you take her there, the vet will probably clean it out and put a cast on the paw for about a week until it heals.

Wash with soap and water, clean with peroxide and re-clean with water. If you can and if she will leave it on try putting triple antibiotic ointment on it and wrap with a gauze bandage for a couple of days and it should be fine. I’ve done this for my dogs b4.

You could try cleaning then bandaging. Yet I’m not sure if she’ll bite at the bandages or not.

my dog cuts his paw often due to excessive running or when he plays at the beach or dog park i usually disinffect the area and i put crazy glue on the cut if its not too large and that usually helps it heal and doesnt make the cut bigger, but keep an eye on it.

Wash and dry the paw. Use peroxide if needed. If it’s not too deep you can use Super Glue to close it up. I have also used Bacitracin or Neosoporin or Bag Balm on a pad cut then covered it with gauze and fabric tape. (Not too tight) You dog will HATE this but try to get her to leave it alone. Just keep moving her head away…nicely. If it looks bad then you should take her to the vet…sorry..not what you wanted to hear.
