I have just got my rats home Help PLEASE?
I got my own female rats home yesterday. They did a lot of fear poops in the pet carrier but were fine in the cage after about an hour. They mainly just sat at the bottom in the corner so I moved them both onto the top floor of their cage.On of them played around up their but the other one climbed down the side of the cage instead of the ramps.I can hand feed them but they spend a LOT of their time in their nest box I made, sleeping. Is this normal? (they are very clever and are already pooping in their litter tray.)

I think you’re overdoing the play time for now… Leave them alone for another day or two, while they get used to smells, sounds and the feel of their cage! Then you can start to tame them by getting them used to you slowly. Good luck, sounds like you have some pretty cool pets there!
I’ve never had rats, but I’ve had bear hamsters and dwarf hamsters (in seperate cages, of course.) The bears hated each other and fought over the smallest area of the cage, which was the petting area. They would crawl down the cage too, instead of using the slide and they slept in the wheel.
My dwarves were always snuggling and running together. They rarely fought.
Rodents just prefer smaller places. They feel more comfortable when they are squeezed in somewhere. Also, they scare easily, so give them a day or two to get adjusted. If the cage isn’t too big, then it won’t take long for them to relax. Good luck.
Also, my friends and I got together one weekend and made a huge maze for the little poops out of cardboard. It was fun to make and the hamsters seemed to enjoy it as well. It was fun to hide treats and watch them climb into the secret rooms and run through the trap doors.
I think its totally normal! I used to have three hamsters and they LOVE to sleep. They sleep for majority of the day and only wake up to eat or stuff food in their cheeks to hide. Rats and mice are usually more active during the night. I would always hear my hamster run his little wheel nonstop at night haha.
This sounds like my two rats! one of them was really scared and hid in her little cave for about a week and would not come out unless I was out of the room. basically all she did was eat and sleep so yeah, it’s completely normal.
I think you should continue hand feeding them so they will know that they can trust you (rats are very food orientated (so basically you’re training them that you=food.) I would also recommend sitting outside their cage when you do your homework or when you read or whatever so that they get used to you being around. also just pat them a bit if they will let you and when they gain a bit more confidence try holding them.
they are probably just shocked that they have changed "homes" and I’m sure they just need to get used to the new environment.
Good luck!
its normal my friend got two rats a couple months ago and she sat them on her knee for ages so they could get used to her, They’d be scared at first I know as I am currently looking after her rats at the moment and they hide from me cos Im new, they’ll get used to u
they are obviously just tired from a long day. they need to get used to their new home. just let them sleep in. sometimes some rats just sit around and sleep. i know, me my bro and mom had rats b4 we moved and my bro’s rat, Gir, only eat, slept, and pooed. he was so melow it was like he was in a come. so their either lazy or they need some rest after their long day. have fun!- Rat lover- Sesshomeruwife
you need to give them a day or so to relax and get used to their surroundings. they are probably scared and they will investigate soon enough even if you dont see it. they may wait til at nite when they feel more secure. and rats sleep alot.
you should start playing with them around day 3
