How do you stop a dog from scratching up your stairs when they smell something?

.

My dog keeps scratching at my steps, I think there is an animal under there, probobly dead because it has been happening for a couple of weeks, he has made a worn spot on one of the steps from trying to dig through and worn the paint off the side and he sometimes bights at the tred. He is a voracious small animal hunter. Very instinctual. When I am here, he doesn’t do it so much, but when I leave him with my son, my son doesn’t pay attention and he digs at the steps. I don’t want him hurting himself or continuing to destroy my steps! lol thanks for your advice!!

There’s probably a mouse (mice!) in there – I suggest you set some traps and catch them – and your problem will end.
