How do I train my new dog to not bark and growl at strangers?

I adopted a 4 year old rottweiler a week ago. When he goes for walks he will bark and lunge at people. I took him to the vet and he growled and snapped at a man in the lobby and then at the vet. I had to put a muzzle on him. He is very big and intimidating. How do I stop him from scaring people?

It’s questionable to train a dog that old, and the type of breed. Rottweiler are very protective too and a guard dog. Best bet is try to consult a trainer. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn’t. Like I’ve said, it is easier to train younger dogs then what you have now, but give it a try. Trying is better than not trying at all. Doing something makes a lot of difference…

It sounds like this dog, You should not have got, somebody is going to get hurt real bad and you are going to lose every thing you own. But now that you have the dog, The very first thing you need to do is find
a professional dog trainer and see if that dog can be saved. sound’s like a Dominate Issue, Please do this asap before a child is hurt or even killed.

At 4 I’d say he’s pretty "set" in his ways. It may be a defensive mechanism for him. You can try and expose him to new experiences in positive ways so he doesn’t feel the need to be aggressive when faced with new people and situations, but that would work far better if it was done when he was a puppy. You may need to do extensive discipline training so that even if you can’t get him to not react negatively at a situation you can get him to at least "sit" or "heel" quickly before he lunges at people. If you need to go extreme you can do something like shock-collar training, but that may just make him meaner. He may just not be able to be around unfamiliar people at this point, at least in uncontrolled situations.

You have aggression issues. Unless you are really good at obedience training and pack leadership, hire a trainer. The sooner the better. You have a large breed dog with problems you don’t want to escalate.

if you cannot train your dog take your dog to obedience school

I would recommend getting Caeser Milan’s book, he will simplistically explain pack leadership to you and tips for controlling your Rottenweiler. You could even apply to be on the show.

But whatever you do, you better act quick, you know, before he kills a child and you loose everything you own!
