So, I was given a 10-week-old puppy last weekend. Not ideal timing for me, but I am very happy to have him and plan to spoil him as I’ve always spoiled my other dog.
As I attempt to get back into my work schedule, I am finding that I’m not functioning well at work when I don’t get a full night’s sleep (go figure!)
I crate trained my first dog, so I’m also trying to crate train the puppy. I’m wondering if the modified crate training I’m doing at night is good or bad.
My solution for the past 2 nights has been:
I have an extremely narrow kitchen. I push the puppy’s crate 3 feet from the wall and keep the door open. This gives him his crate to sleep in, but about 3×4′ of enclosed space just outside his crate for eliminating on weewee pads and newspapers. Just behind his crate, I put my other dog’s crate… so he doesn’t feel alone.
The result so far: he hasn’t messed his crate. He’s using the weewee pads very well. Almost no crying at night.
It almost seems too good to be true. Is this going to teach him the wrong thing in the long run? Or will I be okay to do this until his bladder is a little bigger…?
